He is a General Surgeon with international subspecialty training in Hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB), Liver Transplantation and Trauma Surgery.

He consults on:

  • Liver tumours: benign and cancerous
  • Pancreatic tumours: benign (e.g. IPMN) and cancerous
  • Pancreatitis
  • Obstructive jaundice and cholangitis
  • Gallbladder conditions: gallstones, polyps, cholecystitis
  • Hernias: groin (inguinal/femoral), umbilical, abdominal wall, incisional

John’s current public appointments include:

  • Royal Adelaide Hospital – Hepatopancreaticobiliary, Trauma and Acute Surgical Consultant
  • Flinders Medical Centre – Liver Transplant and Hepatopancreaticobiliary Surgeon

In 2007, John completed his undergraduate medical degree (MBBCh) at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. He went on to complete his internship and medical officers’ years at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. He then specialized in General Surgery through the University of the Witwatersrand and Fellowship of the College of Surgeons of South Africa (FCS(SA)). During his specialization, John completed a research degree (MMed) by performing the first randomized control trial in the laparoscopic management of complicated appendicitis.

Subsequently, John sub-specialised in Hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB). This was done both as a clinical and research fellow at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and the WITS Donald Gordan Medical Centre. During this period, John wrote numerous papers on pancreatitis and the ‘second hit’ associated with the disease process.

John was awarded a laparoscopic Hepatopancreaticobiliary travel fellowship which he completed under the guidance of Prof Marc Besselink at Amsterdam Medical Centre in 2018. Following this, he completed a fellowship with world-renowned surgeons Prof Peter Lodge and Prof Giles Toogood in Hepatopancreaticobiliary and Liver Transplantation in Leeds, UK.

In 2019, he immigrated to Adelaide where he completed two further Hepatopancreaticobiliary fellowships at Royal Adelaide Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre. In 2021, John obtained his Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) by examination.
